Before you buy a ticket

What to wear and bring
Wear what you would wear to a nice casual bar in Shaw or Dupont. Comfortable shoes matter if you stand between rounds. Bring:
- Charged phone (scorecards and check-in are often mobile)
- ID if age verification is required
- A payment method for drinks
- Earplugs only if you are noise-sensitive. Most venues are bar-loud, not concert-loud
Leave the thick binder of “dealbreakers” at home. One or two non-negotiables is enough for four-minute chats.
Arrival and check-in
Get there when the host asks, not “fashionably late.” Rotations break when people trickle in. Phone check-in (common with CitySwoon) or list check-in happens first. You may get a number, a seat assignment, or an app prompt. Ask staff once if something is unclear. Then put the phone away until scoring time.
During the rounds
Keep it light and reciprocal:
- Smile, say your name, ask theirs.
- One specific question (neighborhood, recent museum, favorite Wharf spot) beats “So what do you do?” on repeat.
- Watch the time. When the signal hits, thank them and reset. Do not cling to a great chat or punish a flat one.

You will not click with everyone. That is normal. Volume is the point of the format.
After matching
If you get matches, reply within a day or two with a short, specific note. Suggest coffee in Dupont, a walk at the Wharf, or a drink in Navy Yard. If you get none, you still practiced talking to strangers in a room of people who chose the same experiment. That is useful data. Do not trust organizer marketing about success rates.
